2017 Oregon Gamay Noir | Willamette Valley AVA | Oregon
Our Oregon Gamay Noir is beautifully balanced and was crafted to rival cru Beaujolais from the region of Morgon. This limited Oregon Gamay bottling is a blend of grapes sourced from two distinct vineyard properties chosen specifically for their very different, yet complimentary, climates.
First, we sourced fruit from the award-winning Tualatin Estate Vineyard and it’s Laurelwood soils. This vineyard is known for producing juicy and ripe Oregon Gamay Noir with cranberry fruit flavors and bright acidity. The Tualatin Estate Vineyard was established in 1973 and is known for producing top-tiered wines. It was an early award-winning vineyard site and is important to the history of Oregon wines in the Willamette Valley.
Next, we harvested Oregon Gamay Noir from the meticulously farmed Havlin Vineyard and it’s distinct Ironstone-Bedrock soils. The Havlin Vineyard also benefits from the blustery winds of the Van Duzer Corridor. This unique vineyard is located much further south of the Tualatin Estate in the newly formed Van Duzer Corridor AVA. The Oregon Gamay Noir harvested from the wind-blown Havlin Vineyard has much thicker skins and a lower juice-to-skin ratio due to it’s advanced tannin development.
The Importance of Wind on Oregon Gamay Noir
The importance of the Van Duzer winds on the resulting wine cannot be overstated. The nightly diurnal shift plays an integral part in our Oregon Gamay’s acid retention. The grape’s thicker skins provide more concentration and tannin extraction during the fermentation and maceration process.
Each single vineyard component adds its complimentary characteristics in an extremely unique way. During the final blending session we are able to achieve balance and harmony. The resulting wine is the best of both worlds and showcases a complex array of dark fruit, violets and spice with an underlying electricity and tension. It’s a serious wine that is perfect for the die-hard lover of top-tiered Gamay from Oregon or the Beaujolais region of France.

On approach, expressive aromatics of dark plum, cranberry and baking spice fill the glass. The palate is soft, round and lush showcasing deep layers of spicy, dark plum. A harmonious balance of delicious fruit, soft tannin and acidity lead to a long-lingering finish highlighted with a touch of cinnamon. While this Oregon Gamay Noir is expressive and approachable now, with proper storage it will evolve and enhance beautifully for five to ten plus years in the cellar.
